The battle over bookkeepers
By Ryan Lazanis • Issue #11 • View online
Over the past week, we have learned about Intuit’s “test” of pairing QBO with live bookkeepers that I wrote about in my last issue, officially setting the internet on fire. Some see the move as trying to replace their loyal partners over the years.
Me? I see it simply as a good business move.
It reminds we of something from a few years back.
I had attended the very first QB Connect, back when Quickbooks was more of a desktop product. The VP of Intuit at the time, Jim McGinnis, made the announcement of their push to QBO and what resulted was an angry mob of bookkeepers in the crowd.
Change is not easy.
I would expect the exact same should this new model pan out as well.
But you need to roll with the times. And on-demand, marketplace based services looks to be the future at the moment.
I expand on this in #1 below in this week’s Future Firm Weekly Top 5.

3) Pricing Disconnect
Here’s yet another reason why I see the Big 4 having a hard time adjusting to the new cloud accounting environment; their pricing. After KPMG’s acquisition of the online bookkeeping service, Bookly (now rebranded to KPMG Spark), a website refresh now includes a rather basic pricing table. For around 1k/month you get “KPMG Consulting”. No clue what that is, but it’s certainly not presented properly. I also see this being a sticking point since these firms are so entrenched in the billable hour, presenting consulting/advisory services on a subscription model is something that I feel will be difficult for them to adjust to.
